What is an Athlete Fueling Station?

NCAA deregulated fueling for Division I schools in 2014. Since then, a-number of colleges and universities have been creating athlete fueling stations to meet the nutritional needs for their athletes. This is a location within a sports training area on-campus which acts a an unmanned (usually) food, snack and beverage area serving free products to students looking for a something to sustain themselves during the day and night.

“For post-workout fuel, our athletes can choose a fresh smoothie made with frozen fruit and protein; if they would like something else, there are protein-rich bars, yogurts and granolas, and ready-to-drink protein shakes.”

The fueling station features various everyday foods such as fruit, bagels, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, string cheese, yogurt, trail mix and granola bars among other options. The program hopes to add smoothies in the future.

The goal of the Athlete Fueling Station is to fill the gaps in access to nutrients created by the student-athletes unique time demands and schedules required due to their participation in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, it improves student-athletes’ ability to optimize nutrient timing. Nutrient timing is the application of knowing when to eat and what to eat before during, and after exercise to promote improved recovery, injury reduction and increased performance.
